Rim Kwaku Obeng is a Ghanaian percussionist and multi-instrumentalist known for his groove-inducing music recorded in the late 70s and early 80s. Despite his appealing sound that fits well in today's retro musical landscape, he remains relatively unheralded. Obeng began his career with Ghana's Uhuru Dance Band and gained attention while recording in Los Angeles. However, he faced a setback when a bandmate threatened him with a lawsuit over a potential collaboration with a renowned producer, leading to his abandonment in LA for six months. His breakthrough came when he recorded his debut album, "Rim Arrives," in San Francisco, which features a blend of funk, disco, and afrobeat with catchy call-and-response lyrics. His discography, characterized by a unique mix of soul, funk, and afro-disco, is being reissued by UK-based BBE Records, including "Rim Arrives/International Funk," which is currently available, and his second album "Too Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You Go," set to be released soon.
