Les Rita Mitsouko was a French duo formed in the Spring of 1979, consisting of Ringer on the organ and Chichin on guitar, with other elements pre-recorded. They performed across Europe, officially adopting the name Les Rita Mitsouko for the first time in November 1980. In 1982, they signed with Virgin Records and released their first single, "Minuit Dansant," with the B-side "Don't Forget The Nite" becoming a surprise radio hit. They recorded their self-titled debut album in Cologne, which was released by the end of 1984, featuring hits like "La Jalousie" and "Marcia Baila." Their increasing popularity was highlighted by tours with The Smiths and Kid Creole. In 1986, they recorded their second album, "The No Comprendo," with producer Tony Visconti, which was documented by filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard in "Soigne Ta Droite." The album was released at the end of that year, and the band moved to New York in early 1987 to audition for a live band, leading to a successful European tour. Their next album, "Marc Et Robert," was primarily written in the studio and included collaborations with Sparks. After another tour, they built a new studio at home.
