Ritchie Valens was a Mexican-American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, born on May 13, 1941, in Pacoima, California, USA. He is recognized as a rock and roll pioneer and a forefather of the Chicano rock movement. Valens' recording career lasted only eight months, during which he achieved significant success with several hits, most notably "La Bamba." This song, originally a Mexican folk tune, was transformed by Valens into a rock rhythm, making it a hit in 1958 and establishing him as a key figure in the Spanish-speaking rock and roll movement. Tragically, Valens' life was cut short when he died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, in Clear Lake, Iowa, at the age of 17. This event is famously referred to as The Day The Music Died. In recognition of his contributions to music, Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
