Ryuichi Sakamoto (January 17, 1952 – March 28, 2023) was a renowned Japanese musician, composer, and actor, born in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated with a BA in composition and a Master's degree focused on electronic and ethnic music from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Sakamoto began his career in the mid-1970s, working as a composer, arranger, and producer with popular rock, jazz, and classical artists in Japan. He released his first solo album in 1978 but gained fame as a member of a Japanese synth-rock outfit. He collaborated with David Sylvian on several singles and most of Sylvian's albums. Sakamoto appeared in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, directed by Nagisa Oshima, alongside David Bowie, for which he also wrote the musical score. He won an Academy Award for his score for the 1987 film The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolucci and wrote soundtracks for Pedro Almodovar's High Heels and Oliver Stone's Wild Palms. Sakamoto was married to a Japanese pianist and singer, collaborating with her on some recordings. He was also known for his criticism of copyright law, deeming it outdated in the information age. He was the father of two children and was known by the alias "Ryuichi."
