Roaring Lion, born on February 22, 1908, in Aroquita, British Trinidad and Tobago, was a renowned Trinidadian calypsonian known for his significant contributions to the internationalization of Calypso in the 1930s. His illustrious 65-year career began in the early 1930s, and he is best remembered for his iconic compositions "Ugly Woman" (1933), "Mary Ann," and "Netty, Netty," all of which continue to be performed today. Notably, the song "If You Wanna Be Happy," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 18, 1963, as well as the R&B singles chart, is based on his earlier work "Ugly Woman." Roaring Lion was also referred to as a "walking encyclopedia" by Trinidad & Tobago media, reflecting his extensive knowledge of Calypso and Carnival history. He passed away on July 11, 1999, in Mt. Lambert, Trinidad and Tobago, at the age of 91.
