Robert Ashley (March 28, 1930 – March 3, 2014) was a prominent figure in American contemporary music, renowned for his contributions to new forms of opera and multi-disciplinary projects. His recorded works are celebrated as classics that explore the intersection of language and music. Ashley was educated at the University of Michigan and the Manhattan School of Music. At the University of Michigan, he was involved with the Speech Research Laboratories, focusing on psycho-acoustics and cultural speech patterns, and served as a Research Assistant in Acoustics at the Architectural Research Laboratory.
