Robert Hunter (born Robert Christie Burns on June 23, 1941, in Arroyo Grande, California, USA – died September 23, 2019, in San Rafael, California, USA) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, translator, and poet. He is best known for his collaboration with the Grateful Dead, where he served as a full-time lyricist and released his own recordings on the band's label. Hunter wrote lyrics for several iconic Grateful Dead songs, including "Uncle John's Band," "Dark Star," "Truckin'," and "China Cat Sunflower." His work primarily focused on writing and production, and he also authored several books of poetry. In recognition of his contributions, Hunter was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Grateful Dead in 1994, making him the only non-performer to be inducted as a member of a band. Additionally, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.
