Robert Pete Williams was born on March 14, 1914, in Zachary, Louisiana. He gained recognition while serving time as an inmate at Angola Prison, where folklorists Harry Oster and Richard Allen discovered him. Their recordings of Williams' freewheeling, improvisational blues pieces led to a successful and extensive recording career. He continued to enjoy this career until his death on December 31, 1980.
