Robert Rich is a California native and influential figure in the realm of ambient and experimental music. Although often categorized in the new age genre, his solo and collaborative recordings have significantly impacted a variety of new school ambient and experimental artists. Rich began exploring electronics in the late '70s and later attended Stanford University, where he earned a degree in psychology. His time at Stanford, particularly his involvement with the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, deepened his interest in electronic composition and introduced him to diverse musical ideas. Rich is known for his performance of all-night "sleep concerts," which shaped his focus on psychoacoustics, evident in his early works. His more mature compositions, such as "Rainforest" and "Propagation," blend his interests in electro-acoustical elements with digital sound manipulation. Influenced by artists like [influential artist] and [influential artist], he has gained recognition among fans of gothic, industrial, and dark ambient music, particularly through his collaboration in 1995 with Brian Williams of [collaborative artist].
