Roger Hamilton Spotts was born on June 20, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He aspired to be a saxophonist in California and became a prolific jazz saxophonist, pianist, arranger, and composer in Los Angeles, with a career spanning five decades. Spotts collaborated with renowned musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Music from Central State University in 1951. In 1953, he was an instructor at Fairfield High School in Alabama. In 1959, Spotts married Betty Mosley, a professional pianist, singer, songwriter, dancer, and model. Their only child, Woni Spotts, was born in 1964. He was a member of the American Society of Composers and received The American National Endowment for Arts in 1976. Spotts served on the Board of Directors at the Musicians Credit Union #47 in Los Angeles since 1984 and was involved with Musicians Union #47 since 1970. He acted as the music director for Zola Taylor's Platters and performed with Roger Hamilton Spotts Big Band. In addition to composing, Spotts worked on dance productions with Chester A.
