Roger Whittaker was an Anglo-Kenyan singer-songwriter and musician, born on March 22, 1936, in Nairobi, Kenya, and he passed away on September 13, 2023, in Toulouse, France. Known for his rich baritone voice, whistling and yodeling skills, he captivated audiences with his sentimental songs. Whittaker gained fame for his easy-listening ballads and folk songs, and after serving two years in the British army during the "Mau Mau uprising" at the age of 18, he transitioned from studying medicine and science to a successful music career. His first hit, “Steel Men,” came in 1962, and he is best remembered for his signature song, “The Last Farewell,” released in 1975, which sold 11 million copies worldwide. He recorded songs in multiple languages, including German and French, and enjoyed particular popularity in Germany, as well as success in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and South Africa. Whittaker founded his own record label and organized a songwriting contest for children that received a million entries. He performed at notable venues such as the Grand Ole Opry and at a 50th-anniversary celebration for former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara. He retired to France in 2013.
