Ronie Mesquita, born Ronald Mesquita, is best known for his role as the replacement drummer for Bossa Tres, a group led by Luis Carlos Vinhas. Drawn to the bossa nova boom in America and seeking to escape the US-funded military regime in Brazil, he, like many of his contemporaries, ventured abroad to pursue his musical career. He played with groups such as Gemini 5 and Bossa Rio, the latter being Sergio Mendes' B group, and toured extensively across the US, Mexico, and Japan. Upon returning to Brazil in the early 1970s, he faced a turning point as the demand for trios diminished and safe dinner music fell out of favor. The underground music scene was thriving, with Tropicalia becoming a significant topic among his fellow musicians. The extensive travel of these artists had broadened their musical horizons, influencing their creative output. Ready to step out from a decade-long role as a sideman, Mesquita returned home to form a rotating group of musicians called Central Do Brasil.
