Ronie Mesquita is best known for his role as the replacement drummer for Bossa Tres, a group led by Luis Carlos Vinhas. Drawn to the bossa nova boom in America and seeking to escape the US-funded military regime in Brazil, he, like many of his contemporaries, went abroad to pursue his music career. He played in groups such as Gemini 5 and Bossa Rio, the latter being Sergio Mendes' B group, and toured extensively across the US, Mexico, and Japan. Upon returning to Brazil in the early 1970s, he faced a crossroads as the demand for trios had diminished and safe dinner music was becoming less popular. The underground music scene was thriving, with Tropicalia being a significant topic among musicians. Inspired by his extensive travels and exposure to various music genres, Mesquita decided to step out from a decade-long role as a sideman and formed a collective of rotating musicians called Central Do Brasil.
