Ros Sereysothea was a Cambodian singer born in 1948 in Battambang. Dubbed "The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital" by King Norodom Sihanouk, she gained immense popularity throughout Cambodia in a short period. After the civil war, when the Khmer Republic capitulated on April 17, 1975, Sothea shifted her focus to patriotic songs to uplift the spirits of the citizens in the newly established Khmer Rouge-controlled republic known as "Democratic Kampuchea." In 1977, she was compelled by Pol Pot to marry one of his personal assistants and reportedly died later that year at about the age of 29. The circumstances surrounding her death remain mysterious and have fueled numerous conspiracy theories over the years.
