Real Name: Rotary Connection Bio: Rotary Connection was formed in 1967 by Marshall Chess, the son of Chess label owner Leonard Chess, as a conceptual group to tap into the psychedelic era. With Charles Stepney as co-producer and arranger, the group combined the talents of a lesser-known white rock band with the voices of Black singers, including Minnie Riperton, who Stepney had previously worked with on her solo single “Lonely Girl.” Stepney, a classically trained jazz pianist and vibraphone player, honed his skills at Chess Records in the 1960s and was instrumental in crafting the group’s unique sound, which blended acid-laced rock with classical strings from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riperton’s operatic voice. The group released six albums during their time together, all produced and arranged by Stepney for Chess Records.
