Roy Haynes was an American jazz drummer and bandleader, born on March 13, 1925, in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He began his full-time professional career in 1945 and worked with notable musicians throughout his life. From 1947 to 1949, he collaborated with a prominent saxophonist, and from 1949 to 1952, he was a member of another saxophonist's quintet. During this period, he also recorded with a pianist and various saxophonists. Between 1953 and 1958, Haynes toured with a vocalist. As his career progressed, he worked with more experimental musicians, including several saxophonists and pianists. Haynes recorded or performed with numerous artists and led his own groups starting in the mid-1950s, including ensembles performing under the name Hip Ensemble. His later recordings as a leader include "Fountain of Youth" (2004) and "Whereas" (2007), both of which received Grammy Award nominations. Even into late 2008, Haynes continued to perform internationally, and on December 22, 2010, he was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, receiving the award at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2011.
