Roy Montelongo (1938–2001) was a renowned Tejano musician, saxophonist, bandleader, and radio announcer, born on September 21, 1938, in Hays County, Texas. He was the son of Vicente and Rachel (Guerrero) Montelongo and grew up in a musical family in Austin, Texas, as one of thirteen children. His father, a clarinetist and saxophonist in the Beto Villa Orchestra, taught him to play at a young age. Montelongo performed with Beto Villa at the age of fifteen and later played with other orchestras, including Isidro López, Manuel “Cowboy” Donley y Las Estrellas, and Alfonso Ramos. In 1964, he founded his own band, Roy Montelongo and His Orchestra, in Austin, Texas, releasing his first album, "Austin Presenta Roy Montelongo," on Valmon Records. Throughout his career, he recorded over twenty albums for various labels, including Freddie Records and Buena Vida. In the 1960s, Montelongo collaborated with KWED radio personality Rosita Ornelas and hosted live remote shows in Seguin. He had a significant career in radio, working as a deejay for several stations in Texas, including KTXZ and KOOP in Austin.
