Ruby Johnson (April 19, 1936 – July 4, 1999) was an American soul singer, renowned for her work with the Volt label in the late 1960s. Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, she was raised in the Jewish faith and sang in the Temple Beth-El choir alongside her eight siblings. After high school, she moved to Virginia Beach, where she worked as a waitress and began her career in rhythm and blues with local bands, eventually spending two years with Samuel Latham and the Rhythm Makers. In the late 1950s, she relocated to Washington, D.C., and joined Ambrose and the Showstoppers, the house band at the Spa nightclub. Her manager, local entrepreneur Never Duncan Jr., connected her with record producer Dicky Williams. Johnson's first single, "Calling All Boys," was released in 1960 on the V-Tone label, followed by a series of singles on Duncan's NEBS label, including "Here I Go Again," "Worried Mind," and "Nobody Cares," some of which became local hits.
