Rufus Harley was born on May 20, 1936, near Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. He was the world's first jazz bagpiper and an activist. Although he was originally a saxophonist, he switched to playing the bagpipes after being inspired by the Black Watch pipes at John F. Kennedy's funeral. Harley lived most of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he also campaigned for stricter gun laws. He passed away from prostate cancer on August 1, 2006, at the age of 70.
