Rufus Lumley was born in 1938 and spent much of his life in Connecticut, particularly in the area between New York and Rhode Island. He attended Lodge Professional School, a high school in New York that trained actors, where he showcased his dancing ability. In 1957, he was based in Bridgeport and performed locally as a 'hillbilly' singer, focusing on cowboy-type songs. He became involved with shows staged by the University of Bridgeport around 1958 and 1959. In 1959, Rufus enlisted in the US Air Force, which allowed him to live in various locations across the United States. After completing his service, he returned to Connecticut and sought a record deal, which he eventually secured first with Holton and later with RCA. By the mid-1960s, as soul music began to dominate the charts, he recorded songs in that genre under Holton. During the summer of 1966, Rufus was performing in a restaurant in Norwalk, Connecticut, accompanying himself on the organ, indicating that his record deal had not significantly raised his profile. After signing with RCA in 1967, he promoted his records by visiting radio stations as far away as Chicago. He spent time in Los Angeles in 1968, where he performed live shows, possibly in pursuit of an acting career. In the mid to late 1970s, Rufus lived in Baltic, Connecticut, a small town between Hartford and Providence. By
