Ruins is a Japanese prog-rock/zeuhl/punk/noise/fusion duo formed in 1985 by drummer/vocalist Tatsuya Yoshida and a bass guitarist. Over the course of 20 years, the group changed bassists four times. Since the departure of the last bassist in 2004, Yoshida has continued to perform solo with only a drum kit. Originally intended to be a power trio, Ruins abandoned the guitar after a handful of rehearsals and moved forward as a two-piece. The duo produces a unique fusion of punk and progressive/noise rock, incorporating elements of jazz fusion, math rock, and zeuhl. All material is composed and written in score form by Yoshida, with significant influence from the French band Magma. Ruins' original lyrics were primarily written in an invented language similar to Kobaïan. On their first recordings, Ruins collaborated with NYC experimental saxophonist, who later released their albums. The duo has worked with several prominent avant-garde musicians and has released numerous albums on various labels, including Yoshida's own. Ruins has toured extensively around the world, notably as part of the Japanese New Music Festival. After the last bassist, Hisashi Sasaki, left the band, Yoshida embarked on a 'Bassist Wanter Tour' in 2005, performing solo and seeking a new companion for the project. He eventually decided to pursue a solo unit and has been invited to perform at events like All Tomorrow
