Rüstəm Quliyev was born in 1969 in the village of Kosalar, located in the mountainous region of Nagorno Karabakh, South East Azerbaijan. He mastered the Tar, a traditional Azerbaijani string instrument, by the age of seven and later began playing the Saz. In the early 1990s, Quliyev moved to Baku, where he performed at weddings, made television appearances, and recorded numerous cassettes with small local labels, all while hip-hop, acid house, and electro-pop were gaining popularity in the West. His guitar playing was distinguished by a global scope of musical influences, blending the rich traditions of Azerbaijan with a passion for music from around the world. Rüstəm Quliyev passed away in 2005 after a short battle with lung cancer.
