Rusty York was an American rockabilly and bluegrass guitarist, banjo player, harmonicist, and singer, born on May 24, 1935, in Harlan County, Kentucky. He passed away on January 26, 2014, in St. Petersburg, Florida. An inductee to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Rusty earned his nickname from the name inscribed on the second-hand guitar he played in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he traveled at 17 years old to perform in bars alongside Willard Hale, with whom he later recorded. Rusty worked closely with various artists, both at his record store and onstage. He played on numerous country and rockabilly records for several labels, including the national hit "Sugaree." He also fronted Bobby Bare’s backing band for a time and worked in Las Vegas. In 1961, Rusty established Jewel Recording Studios in his garage, later relocating to 1594 Kinney Avenue in Mt. Healthy, Cincinnati, where he operated until retiring and closing the studio in 2008. The initials "RY" etched in record runouts indicate that he cut the lacquer.
