Ruth Gipps was an English composer, oboist, pianist, conductor, and educator, born on 20 February 1921 and passing away on 23 February 1999. She founded both the Chanticleer Orchestra and served as its conductor and music director. Later in her career, she became chairwoman of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1981 Birthday Honours.
