Ryuichi Sakamoto (January 17, 1952 – March 28, 2023) was a prominent Japanese musician, composer, and actor born in Tokyo, Japan. He studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, earning a BA in composition and a Master's degree focused on electronic and ethnic music. Sakamoto began his career in the mid-1970s, working as a composer, arranger, and producer with many of Japan's leading rock, jazz, and classical artists. He released his first solo album in 1978 but gained widespread recognition as a member of a Japanese synth-rock outfit, collaborating with notable artists, including David Sylvian. He appeared in the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, directed by Nagisa Oshima, alongside David Bowie, for which he also composed the score. Sakamoto won an Academy Award for his work on the score for the 1987 film The Last Emperor, and he later wrote soundtracks for Pedro Almodovar's High Heels and Oliver Stone's Wild Palms. He was married to a Japanese pianist and singer, with whom he collaborated on various recordings. Additionally, Sakamoto was an outspoken critic of copyright law, deeming it outdated in the digital age. He was the father of two children and was known by an alias.
