Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本龍一) was a renowned Japanese musician, composer, and actor, born on January 17, 1952, in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music with a BA in composition and a Master's degree focused on electronic and ethnic music. Sakamoto began his career in the mid-1970s, collaborating with prominent rock, jazz, and classical artists in Japan. He released his first solo album in 1978 and gained fame as a member of a Japanese synth-rock band, co-founding it alongside other notable musicians. Sakamoto worked closely with David Sylvian on various singles and albums. He appeared in Nagisa Oshima's 1983 film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," alongside David Bowie, for which he also composed the musical score. His work on the score for the 1987 film "The Last Emperor" earned him an Academy Award. Additionally, he wrote soundtracks for Pedro Almodóvar's "High Heels" and Oliver Stone's "Wild Palms." Sakamoto was married to a Japanese pianist and singer, collaborating with her on several recordings. He was also known for his criticism of copyright law, deeming it outdated in the information age. He was the father of two children and had an alias. Sakamoto passed away on March 28, 2023, in Tokyo.
