Ryuichi Sakamoto is a Japanese composer and pianist who first collaborated with English singer-songwriter David Sylvian in 1980, contributing keyboards to the track "Taking Islands in Africa" for an album. Their first significant collaboration occurred in 1982 with the release of the single "Bamboo Houses / Bamboo Music," which they co-produced and was released by Virgin. The duo worked together again in 1983 on "Forbidden Colours," the theme song for the film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," which was released as a single and featured on the movie's soundtrack. The following year, a re-recorded version of the track was released as the B-side to the lead single from Sylvian's first solo album, and it later appeared as a bonus track on some editions of the album in 1987. Variations of "Forbidden Colours" have been recorded and performed by both artists, including an orchestral version featuring Sylvian's vocals on a 1999 album. In 1991, Sakamoto and Sylvian, along with another collaborator, recorded "Heartbeat (Tainai Kaiki II)," which was released as a single from Sakamoto's ninth solo studio album.
