Sadistic Mika Band was a Japanese band known for its glam rock and funk rock style, formed in 1972 by guitarist Kazuhiko Katō after he was inspired by the glam rock scene in London. The band included singer and Katō's then-wife Mika, drummer Tsunoda, and lead guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka, all from Japan. They released their first single, "Cycling Boogie," on June 21, 1972, under Kato's newly formed record label, which was Japan's first private label. Their self-titled debut album, a mix of glam rock and light progressive rock, was released the following year. In 1974, they released the album "Black Ship" (Kurofune), produced by British producer Chris Thomas, which received critical acclaim in the UK but had poor sales outside Japan. Following some lineup changes, including Tsunoda's departure and the addition of bassist Ohara, the band released their third album, "Hot! Menu," in 1975. This album gained significant attention, with their single "Mada Mada Samba" receiving airplay on BBC Radio One, and they performed on several BBC TV shows. After Mika and Kazuhiko Katō divorced, she later married Chris Thomas, while the remaining members continued as the jazz rock-oriented band until they disbanded in 1979.
