Sahib Shihab was an American jazz saxophonist, primarily known for playing the baritone saxophone, but he also played alto and soprano saxophones, as well as the flute. Born on June 23, 1925, in Savannah, Georgia, he was originally self-taught on the alto saxophone before studying at the Boston Conservatory. After converting to Islam in 1947, he changed his name to Sahib Shihab. Throughout his career in the United States, Shihab performed with notable musicians such as Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie, who encouraged him to take up the baritone saxophone. He later joined the Quincy Jones Big Band, with whom he traveled to Europe and remained until 1986. During this time, Shihab recorded several albums as a leader, including two highly regarded albums for the German label Vogue, titled "Seeds" and "Companionship." Many of his recordings have not been reissued. Additionally, he was a long-time member of the Clarke-Boland Big Band, recording with them from 1963 to 1972. Sahib Shihab passed away on October 24, 1989, in Nashville, Tennessee.
