The Salem Travelers is a long-standing gospel group hailing from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1962. Over the years, the group has seen various members contribute to its rich sound. Founding members include Sam Hanchett (bass vocals, 1962-86), Chester Feemster (lead tenor vocals, 1962-86), Tanlon Thomas (vocals, 1962-80), William "Bill" Ford (vocals, 1962-80), Arthur Davis (lead vocals, 1962-73), Timothy Bailey (lead vocals, 1962-67), and Robert Dixon (lead vocals, 1968-86, 2004-present). The group also featured Jessie McDaniels (vocals, 1981-86), Paul Smith (vocals, 1981-86), and Joe Ocean (vocals, 1981-86). Since 2004, Rev. Harris, Rev. Robert Skinner, Jr., Larry Skinner, Sr., and Floyd Skinner have joined the ensemble. The Salem Travelers have also been known by several names, including Robert Dixon and the Salem Travelers, Robert Dixon and the Original Salem Travelers, The Salem Travelers Of Chicago, The Salem Travlers, and The Soulful Salem Travelers.
