Salt N Pepa is a hip-hop duo formed in the mid-1980s, consisting of Cheryl "Salt" James from Brooklyn and Sandra "Pepa" Denton from Queens. Both were nursing students at Queensborough Community College and became close friends while working at Sears. They recorded a single called "The Showstopper," an answer record to Doug E. Fresh's "The Show," for a class project by a co-worker studying record production, which reached No. 46 on the Billboard R&B chart in late 1985. In September 1986, they signed with Next Plateau Records, added a female DJ named "Spinderella," and adopted the stage name Salt 'N' Pepa. Their first album, released in December 1986, initially struggled until DJs began playing "Push It" in 1987, which propelled the song to No. 19 on the charts and led to platinum sales, marking their international breakthrough.
