Sam & Bill was an R&B vocal duo formed in Newark, New Jersey, consisting of Bill Johnson and Sam Gary. Bill Johnson, born on October 16, 1932, in Augusta, Georgia, first recorded with a group called the Steps Of Rhythm for Sun Records. Sam Gary, originally the guitarist for the group Soul Brothers, teamed up with Johnson in 1962. The duo became known for their gospel-influenced sound, similar to other vocal duos of the early 60s soul movement, such as Sam And Dave and the Righteous Brothers. They had notable hits with deep soul versions of pop ballads, including "For Your Love," which reached number 14 on the R&B charts in 1965, and "Fly Me To The Moon," which peaked at number 38 R&B in 1966. After their record label, JoDa, folded, the duo disbanded. Johnson later recruited Sam Davis Jr. to form a new duo, which recorded for Brunswick Records in 1967 but did not achieve success.
