Sam Cooke (born January 22, 1931, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, USA - died December 11, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, USA) was an American gospel, R&B, soul, and pop singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He is recognized as one of the founders of soul music and is considered one of the most important singers in its history. Details surrounding his death remain disputed, with official police records stating he was killed by a gunshot. In 1961, he founded a record label, which folded after his death. He was the younger brother of a songwriter who co-wrote "Chain Gang" and the elder brother of another sibling. Cooke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 as a performer and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987.
