Sarah Hennies (b. 1979, Louisville, KY) is a percussionist and composer based in Ithaca, NY. Her work focuses on an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound, characterized by a demanding endurance-based performance practice. This approach has been described by Nathan Thomas of Fluid Radio as "a highly sophisticated and refined performance technique...that starts and ends with listening and encourages a different way of listening from its audience." Hennies earned her M.A. in percussion from the University of California-San Diego in 2003, studying under renowned percussionist Steven Schick. She is a member of Meridian, a percussion trio alongside Tim Feeney and Greg Stuart. Before moving to Ithaca, Hennies spent ten years in Austin, TX, where she performed with the Austin New Music Co-op, The Weird Weeds, and numerous other projects. In 2016, she was selected as a fellow in music/sound by the New York Foundation for the Arts. Hennies is also known for interpreting works by modern composers, having recorded and performed pieces by notable figures such as John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, and many others. Her compositions and performances are available on various labels, including Quakebasket, Senufo Editions, Consumer Waste, Astral Spirits, Accidie, and Quiet Design. In 2013, she founded a record label to release her own work and other innovative music by living composers.
