Sarah Vaughan was an American jazz singer born on March 27, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. She gained recognition after winning a talent contest in 1942 at Harlem's Apollo Theater with her performance of "Body And Soul." Vaughan was a member of a group from 1942 to 1944, and from 1944 to 1945 of another group. Between 1946 and 1957, she was accompanied on the piano by notable musicians. She collaborated with various artists and eventually became a solo artist. Vaughan was married three times: first to a husband from 1946 to 1958, then to another from 1958 to 1961, and finally to a third partner from 1978 to 1981. She passed away on April 3, 1990, in Hidden Hills, California.
