Sarah Webster Fabio was a US poet and black studies academic associated with the Black Arts Movement. Born on January 20, 1928, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Thomas Webster and Mayme Louise Storey Webster, she married Cyril Fabio in 1946 and divorced him in 1972. She passed away on November 7, 1979, from colon cancer at the age of 51. A mother of five children, she had a daughter who filmed a documentary about her in 1976 titled "Rainbow Black: Poet Sarah W. Fabio." Webster Fabio played a significant role in introducing the Black Arts Movement to Bay Area colleges in California. After her tenure at Merritt College, she held positions at California College Of Arts And Crafts and the University Of California, Berkeley, between 1968 and 1971. At both institutions, she was instrumental in establishing the first Black studies departments, earning her the title of Mother of Black Studies.
