schroothoop is a Brussels-based trio that creates music using homemade instruments crafted from lost and found objects, such as scrap wood and old metal. Their unique sound features PVC flute melodies, jerry can beats, and washtub bass lines, drawing inspiration from global sounds. The band consists of Rik Staelens (wind and string instruments), Timo Vantyghem (bass and clarinet), and Margo Maex (percussion). The group formed in the residential area between the boroughs of Jette and Laken, where they were inspired by a pile of illegally dumped items. After discovering the waste, they spontaneously decided to turn it into a concert, with Margo building a drum from waste bins and Rik transforming PVC pipes into flutes and clarinets. Their performance at Laken on Stage featured a jam of improvised, tribal junk sounds that captivated the audience. Following this success, they recorded a mini-album that showcases their musical journey through seven semi-improvised tracks.
