Secession was a Scottish synth-pop band active from 1983 to 1987. The original lineup included Peter Thomson (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, and vocals), Jack Ross (guitar, synthesizer, and vocals), Jim Ross (bass guitar), and Carole L. Branston (keyboards and vocals). Initially known as The Gift, they caught the attention of local entrepreneur Hamish Brown after a performance at Buster Brown’s nightclub in Edinburgh, leading to his management offer. Alistair MacLeod (percussion and vocals) joined the band, contributing a photograph for their independently released debut single, "Betrayal." After recording demos at Palladium Studios, Jack Ross left due to disillusionment with the band's musical direction. MacLeod then took on additional responsibilities with synthesizers and sequencing, but shortly thereafter, Jim Ross departed, leaving a trio that produced the original demo of "Fire Island." This demo attracted the attention of Beggars Banquet Records, leading to their signing. The trio re-recorded "Fire Island" at REL Studios, which was later remixed by a production team associated with Freeez and John Rocca. MacLeod left to focus on photography and was replaced by Charlie D. Kelly. The final lineup, responsible for most of the band's released catalog, consisted of Thomson, Branston, Kelly, and J.L.
