Sergey Anatolyevich Kuryokhin was a renowned pianist, composer, band leader, actor, director, performer, and public figure, born on June 16, 1954, in Murmansk, USSR. He passed away from cancer on July 9, 1996, at the age of 42 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Kuryokhin first gained public attention as a jazz pianist, performing solo and collaborating with notable musicians such as Vladimir Chekasin and Anatoly Vapirov. In the early 1980s, prior to being allowed to travel outside the Soviet Union, he became a cult figure in the Russian underground scene through his records released by Leo Records and various television programs. In 1984, he founded the Popular Mechanics Orchestra, a band that embodied a concept and philosophy, capable of transforming from a modest trio to a grand multimedia performance involving symphonies, brass bands, rock groups, circuses, and more. The orchestra toured extensively around the world. Kuryokhin's discography includes over 40 LPs and CDs, and he composed music for numerous films globally. His influence extended beyond his recorded works; he was recognized as a dynamic catalyst of artistic life, uniting and shaping the artistic community during a revolutionary era that transitioned the stagnant Soviet Union into a new and vibrant Russia.
