Setona (ستونة) is a Sudanese singer and musician born in Khartoum to a family from the Kordofan province. Despite the challenges of pursuing a career as a female musician in a society that often views such roles as indecent, she draws inspiration from her family's musical background, including an uncle who founded a jazz band in the 1950s. Setona lives in Khartoum, in a diverse community that includes people from various Central African countries such as Nigeria, Zaire, and Ethiopia, as well as southern Sudan. Together with her husband Ahmed, a teacher and music collector, Setona incorporates a wide range of African rhythms and melodies into her work. Her music reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the region, blending influences from East Africa (Taraab), Zaire (Soukous), Ghana (Highlife), Nigeria (JuJu, Fuji), Sierra Leone (Palmwine music), and other countries including Uganda, Ethiopia, Chad, Senegal, and Nubia, creating a sound that is both pan-African and distinctly Sudanese.
