Shalamar is an R&B group formed in 1976 in New York City by Dick Griffey and British producer Simon Soussan. Their first release, "Uptown Festival," featured anonymous session singers, and upon its success, the duo decided to create a proper group, recruiting dancers Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel, and initially Gary Mumford, who was later replaced by Gerald Brown. In 1979, Howard Hewett joined the group, completing its most recognized lineup. In 1983, Watley and Daniel left to pursue solo careers, and were replaced by Delisa Davis and Micki Free. Hewett departed in 1986 for his own solo endeavors, leading to Sidney Justin taking his place. The band disbanded in 1991, but Justin continued to tour with a new version of Shalamar. In 2005, Hewett and Daniel reformed the group with Carolyn Griffey, daughter of Dick Griffey, and they appeared on the British talent show "Hit Me Baby One More Time." Although they did not win, they continued to tour. In 2015, Jody Watley acquired the trademark to the Shalamar name and began touring with new members Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy. This led to a conflict between Watley's version and the Hewett and Daniel-led reformation, both using the Shalamar name.
