Sharon Jones was an American gospel-influenced soul and funk singer, born on May 4, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia. She passed away on November 18, 2016, in Cooperstown, New York, at the age of 60. Jones was the lead singer of a soul and funk revivalist band based in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in North Augusta, South Carolina, she moved to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, in 1960. She began her performing career in the 1970s and also worked as a prison guard at Rikers Island in the late 1980s, followed by a position as an armed security guard for Wells Fargo. Jones was discovered by a producer at a 1996 session where she was backing another soul singer. She began recording with the producer for various projects, leading to her debut album in 2002, which was Daptone's first album release. In 2013, Jones was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer but returned to performing in 2014. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in November 2015. She was the subject of the 2016 documentary "Miss Sharon Jones!"
