Shellac is an indie rock band from Chicago, IL, formed in 1992 by vocalist/guitarist Steve Albini and drummer Todd Trainer. The band initially included former bassist Camilo Gonzalez, who participated in their first rehearsals and recorded one song, "Rambler Song," before Bob Weston joined as the permanent bassist. Their music has been classified as post-hardcore, noise rock, and math rock, although Shellac prefers to describe themselves as a "minimalist rock trio." Due to the geographic separation of its members—Albini and Weston living in Chicago and Trainer residing in Minnesota—as well as their commitments to day jobs (Albini and Weston as recording engineers and Trainer managing a warehouse and bartending), Shellac recorded and performed infrequently.
