Sherbet was an Australian band formed in April 1969 in Sydney, emerging from the remnants of two dance bands. Initially a soul-based covers band, they evolved into a pop/rock group, stabilizing their lineup in 1972 with members including Clive Shakespeare. Over their active years, Sherbet released 15 albums and 30 singles between 1971 and 1978, achieving 20 consecutive hits and winning the title of Best Australian Group at the TV Week King of Pop Awards from 1973 to 1978. They gained a distinctive sound through Garth Porter's Mellotron machine. In 1979, the band changed their name to Highway in an attempt to enter the US market with a heavier image, but this effort was unsuccessful. After disbanding in 1979, they briefly reunited as The Sherbs, targeting an audience of their own age, but this also did not succeed. From 1999 onward, Sherbet has reunited several times with original members returning to perform together.
