Shigeto is a Detroit-based Japanese-American musician, DJ, and label co-founder, as well as a host on WDET 101.9FM. His real name is Saginaw, which is also his middle name and his grandfather's name, honoring the Japanese side of his family. The name Shigeto means "to grow." Raised in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area, he studied jazz for three semesters at the New School in NYC and another three in London, where he learned electronic production. In the early 2010s, he moved to Brooklyn and adopted the name Shigeto. After a period there, he returned to Michigan in 2013 and became an integral part of Detroit's music scene. In 2017, he co-founded a label with his brother and a friend.
