Shintaro Katsu, born on November 29, 1931, and passed away on June 21, 1997, was a renowned Japanese Yakuza actor, singer, producer, and director. He was nicknamed Katsu-shin and was the younger brother of actor Tomisaburo Wakayama. Katsu is best known for his iconic role as the blind Yakuza masseur Zatoichi, which he portrayed in 25 films from 1962 to 1973. The Zatoichi series gained immense popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, earning him a dedicated fan, Cuban former Chairperson Fidel Castro. In 1990, American musician Prince expressed interest in featuring Katsu in a music video as Zatoichi, but the collaboration did not materialize due to various circumstances. Katsu also shared a notable friendship with American actor Dennis Hopper, who attended Japanese film festivals and felt a kinship with Katsu as an actor of a similar style. Despite his success, Katsu's personal life was troubled. He struggled with alcoholism and faced legal issues related to drug use, including marijuana, opium, and cocaine, leading to several arrests in 1978, 1990, and 1992.
