The Shirelles were an American girl group formed in New Jersey in 1958, notable for being the first to achieve a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The quartet consisted of lead singer Shirley Alston (later known as Shirley Alston Reeves), Doris Kenner (later known as Doris Jackson), and two other members. They gained fame with a series of hits, including "Baby It's You," "Mama Said," "Foolish Little Girl," and the US #1 Pop songs "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Soldier Boy." The Shirelles were pioneers as the first major female vocal group of the rock and roll era, bridging the gap to white audiences before the rise of Motown. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as performers.
