Shirley Caesar, born on October 13, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina, is an esteemed American gospel singer, songwriter, and recording artist, often referred to as the "First Lady of Gospel Music." Her career, which has spanned seven decades, began in the 1950s as a member of an all-female gospel group. In 1966, she transitioned to a solo career and later became a pastor in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she continues to reside and record music. Throughout her illustrious career, Caesar has made significant appearances on nationally televised events and in commercials, TV shows, and movies. She has garnered numerous accolades, including 12 Grammy Awards, 14 Stellar Awards, 18 Dove Awards, and a gold certification from the RIAA. Additionally, she has received the Essence Award, McDonald's Golden Circle Lifetime Achievement Award, NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, SESAC Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Rhapsody & Rhythm Award from the National Museum of African American Music. She is also an inductee of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy in 2017. Over her career, Shirley Caesar has released more than forty albums.
