Sidney Bechet was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer, born on May 14, 1897, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He passed away on May 14, 1959, in Paris, France. Bechet was one of the first important soloists in jazz and is considered perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist. His playing was characterized by a forceful delivery, well-constructed improvisations, and a distinctive, wide vibrato. Despite his talent, Bechet's erratic temperament hampered his career, and it was not until the late 1940s that he gained wide acclaim. He began his career at a young age, playing in jazz bands. From the 1920s onwards, Bechet primarily performed abroad in cities like London and Paris, as well as in New York. In 1932, he founded a band. After World War II, he mostly resided in Paris.
