Sigue Sigue Sputnik is a British New Wave band formed in 1982 in London by Tony James, the former bassist of Generation X. The band's name is thought to reference a Russian street gang, roughly translating to "burn, burn satellite," with "sigue" derived from a form of the Russian verb сжигать, meaning burn, and "Sputnik" referring to the first man-made satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.
